Neonatal calves affected by haemorrhages unrelated to BNP.

چکیده

JUNE 2012 was the coolest June since 1998 and across southern and eastern Scotland it was the wettest June on record. Rainfall was 250 per cent to 300 per cent of normal in the Borders, Lothians and Fife, and the number of days with rain was among the highest in the past 50 years. In marked contrast, it was drier than average in Shetland and parts of the north-west and the Western Isles, with sunshine totals above normal in these areas. American foulbrood (AFB) was confirmed in an apiary in Inverness-shire. AFB is notifiable under the Bee Diseases and Pests Control (Scotland) Order 2007 (as amended). It kills off bee larvae, is highly contagious and difficult to eradicate. Unlike European foulbrood (EFB), hives with AFB cannot be treated and must be destroyed. Appropriate disease control actions were taken. Beekeepers were urged to register on BeeBase, the national bee database, in order to assist Scottish Government Bee Inspectors control this and other diseases. This database provides beekeepers with access to up-to-date information on the control of AFB and bee-related issues.

Ingestion of colostrum from specific cows induces Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP) in some calves

BACKGROUND Since 2006, cases of haemorrhagic diathesis in young calves have been observed with a much higher incidence than previously known. The syndrome, now uniformly called Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP), is characterized by multiple (external and internal) haemorrhages, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia, and bone marrow depletion. Although various infectious and toxicological causes of ...

Evidence of a high incidence of subclinically affected calves in a herd of cattle with fatal cases of Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP)

BACKGROUND Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia (BNP) is a disease of calves characterised by bone marrow trilineage hypoplasia, mediated by ingestion of alloantibodies in colostrum. Suspected subclinical forms of BNP have been reported, suggesting that observed clinical cases may not represent the full extent of the disease. However to date there are no objective data available on the incidence of sub...

Bovine neonatal pancytopenia - Comparative proteomic characterization of two BVD vaccines and the producer cell surface proteome (MDBK)

BACKGROUND Bovine neonatal pancytopenia (BNP) is a disease syndrome in newborn calves of up to four weeks of age, first observed in southern Germany in 2006. By now, cases have been reported in several countries around the globe. Many affected calves die within days due to multiple haemorrhages, thrombocytopenia, leukocytopenia and bone marrow depletion. A certain vaccine directed against Bovin...

Bovine Neonatal Pancytopenia - an Emerging Disease in Europe - Clinical Signs, Haematology and Pathology

An unexplained haemorrhagic disorder of young calves, Bovine Neonatal Pancytopaenia (BNP), has appeared in Europe since 2007. BNP affected 14 beef calves born between March 2009 and April 2010 in 210-cow Scottish beef herd; only one calf survived. During both calving seasons the cows appeared clinically well and calved normally, giving birth to apparently healthy calves of a good birth weight. ...

Incidence of bovine neonatal pancytopenia in 243 farms in Germany

BACKGROUND Several research groups from different European countries have worked on the aetiopathogenesis of bovine neonatal pancytopenia (BNP) and an association between the use of the vaccine PregSure BVD (Pfizer, Germany) and the development of this haemorrhagic disease was confirmed. Because BNP is not a notifiable disease, it is difficult to obtain information on its incidence. Based on ph...
